On the border of Yunan and Sichuan provinces, there’s a rarely visited village where women are free to change sexual partners every night. This has been going on for the past 2,000 years.
These women are from Mosuo tribe and they live along the shores of Lugu Lake. This tribe practice the matriarchal system where women take the leadership in the society – such as making major decisions and controlling households. This leaves men powerless.
Mosuo women don’t marry, but instead, they can have as many lovers as they wish. Every adult Mosuo woman will be given a dedicated room where her partner can visit every night.... under one condition: he must leave the next morning. And this Mosuo woman can change partners every night. Each relationship can last for a lifetime, but it can also last only for one night.
No need for teary breakups, Mosuo women just close their doors and this is a clear sign for the man to back off. When a child is born out of this relationship, the child belongs to the mother side and will inherit her surname. The child will not be introduced to their fathers until the coming-of-age ceremony.
The ceremony will be held when a girl reaches 13 years old. On this special day, she will receive presents such as traditional head dress, turquoise tunic and jewelry. After the ceremony, she will be given her own space and starts opening doors for men.
Unfortunately, this tradition is often misused to attract tourists.... Some women even claim themselves as Mosuo women to make money in prostitution.
